Philip  Sutton

Woodcuts 1962-1976

22nd May – 26th June 2021
The Philip Sutton Gallery Bridport

After making drawings from life directly onto board, Philip cut shapes out of the wood and then inked each piece with his chosen colour before putting the pieces back together. The assembled blocks were then pressed by the printing press. Sutton worked with the printer Ian Mortimer to make these works using Japanese Hosho paper. The paper’s fibre which comes from the bark of the kozo tree is especially strong and absorbent and perfect for woodblock printing. As well as his bold, unique woodcuts there is also on show in this exhibition four of the artist’s lithographs, each representing birds.

Ian Mortimer’s printing press with Sutton’s “Cornwall” woodcut (c.1970).
